I'm making a quilt I need an opinion on which would look best on it?

I'm making a quilt for my boyfriend for his birthday. He collects playing cards so I was going to do like a bunch of big squares and have like one row of playing card fabric then red then the next row black fabric then the playing card one again and like keep repeating that. I was going to cut out the suits for the cards from one fabric and sew it onto the other one like i would sew a red heart on the black fabric. I told my nana about that and she thinks it'd look better if i embroidered an outline of the stuff onto the fabric instead. So now I don't know which one would look better. Any opinions on which would look better?
