Can someone give me some tips on how to improve the sound my writing (in general)?

My advice is just write: get it on the page, don't worry about style initially, worry about that when it comes to re-writing or editing. Once you have the content down, then you can experiment with the form, try writing your sentences in different ways, think about word choice etc. But first, get it on the page.
