Can animals get food poisoning?

i had frozen mince thawing out on the bence all day, that night i decided to cook something else and so i refroze it, i have been told not to eat it as it will cause food poisoning unless i cook then freeze.. however is it all right to cook it for my cat? do cats suffer food poisoning at all?
